Brevard County homeowners who upgrade a traditional septic tank to an advanced or aerobic treatment unit (ATU) may qualify for up to $20,000 under the Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Septic Upgrade Voluntary Grant Program.
Traditional septic systems are usually an environmentally safe way to dispose of domestic waste. Systems that are poorly maintained or installed in unfavorable areas can add excess nutrients, bacteria and viruses to the environment.
ATUs support a wider diversity of bacteria than a conventional system. Those bacteria break down more solids and reduce the nitrogen released into the environment.
Brevard County’s Save Our Indian River Lagoon Program, funded by the ½ cent sales tax approved by Brevard voters in 2016, reduces nitrogen and phosphorus pollution entering the lagoon.
The voluntary grant provides up to $20,000 in financial assistance to homeowners who upgrade to Advanced or Aerobic Treatment Units™. Permit fees are not included.
